"Abstraction allows man to see with his mind what he cannot see physically with his eyes."
- Arshile Gorky
Stefan Achilles (1905-1990) was an enigmatic figure in the Abstract Expressionism Movement, whose body of work recently resurfaced in a garage attic in Connecticut. He was a member of The Club, and published a few drawings in It Is Magazine (1959), both founded by his good friend, Philip Pavia. Achilles, though, remained in the shadows of the art world and refused to show or sell his artwork. His tools were inks (mostly sumi-e), lithographers paper, and, at times, an old printing press.
